oh and also...

In addition to the schedule changes below, I'm transitioning him (ever-so-slowly) away from formula and onto soy milk. Right now, he's getting 6oz formula + 2oz soy milk mixed in...eventually that'll go to a 50/50 split, and then after that be mostly soy milk, until it's 100%.

(Babies are supposed to drink whole milk, not skim or 2%, but since he's allergic to cow's milk from what we've seen, he's getting soy milk. I looked, and it seems as though there's only one type of soy milk. Hopefully it's the right stuff.)

It hasn't phased him yet. He still sucks the bottle down just like always. Maybe this change will be easier than the whole nap thing.

Babies are creatures of habit...they like schedules and consistency. Hmm, no wonder he's cranky with all this upheaval of his routine!

busy busy busy...

The Booga Boy has "graduated" to a new classroom at daycare. He's now in Room C with the 18mo+ kids...and he's having trouble adjusting.

Up to now, his schedule (at home) had been:

6 - 7am get up
7 - 9am have breakfast, watch Sesame Street
9:15ish - 11:00ish (give or take half an hour) down for morning nap
11:00ish - 1:30ish go for walk, play with toys, have lunch
1:30ish - 3:30ish down for afternoon nap
3:30ish - 5:30 play
5:30 - 6:30 go for walk with Daddy
6:30 - 7:30 or 8:00 eat dinner, play, watch Elmo
7:30 or 8:00 down for the night

He only goes to day care two days a week, but the change in rooms has changed everything at home too.

Most kids at his age (almost 18mos) have switched from 2 naps/day to only one. Unfortunately, he hadn't. Room C has a fixed schedule, and the kids in there go down for a nap between noon and 2pm, and that's it. So...his schedule has gotten shaken up.

Hubby was convinced we should start switching him to having one nap/day, which we've started doing. I'm having my doubts. More and more I think he still needs the two naps/day, judging by his relative increase in crankiness and still rubbing his eyes and looking tired right around his previous nap times.

So his new schedule (every day, so that each day is consistent - it would be even more jarring I think to have MTuF be 2 naps/day on the old schedule and WTh be the new totally different schedule) is:

6:00 - 7:00am get up
7:00 - 10:00 eat breakfast, watch Sesame Street, play
Wed/Thurs:
9:00am go to daycare (with nap from noon - 2pm)
M/Tu/F:
10:00am - 11am walk with Grandpa
11am - 11:30am lunch
11:30am - 2:00 or 2:30pm nap (yeah, 3 hours most days)
2:00 or 2:30pm - 5:30pm play, go to park or pool, watch Elmo, etc.
5:30pm and on, same as previous schedule

I want to give it a try, this conversion, to appease hubby. If it seems not to be working within the next week or so, I'll switch him back. I'm sleep deprived and so is hubby. I do *not* want the Booga Boy to be sleep-deprived if there's no need for it.

So much of parenting is common sense + trial and error. If the Booga Boy needs more sleep than other kids right now (which I did at his age, IIRC), then I want him to be able to get it. We shouldn't *force* him to conform to what "they" say kids his age should be doing if it's not right for him. He'll get there on his own time.

Oh, and I've been working on more photos. Those should be up soon. =)

Couple's online gaming causes infant's death - News at GameSpot

Stupid, stupid people. You don't leave an infant home alone for any period of time!! DUH! And to leave the house to go play a computer game?!?!

GAH! Arrrgh.

booga boy barber visit

Today my wee one (the Booga Boy) got his second haircut. Nearly a buzz cut, honestly. I knew I wanted it shorter, but it turned out to be REALLY short.

But he was so good. He just sat on my lap in the chair, played with his toy, and let the hairdresser use the clippers, no problem. He was curious about the buzzing at first, but then he got distracted by hubby (who was there getting his hair cut too) and spun his toy.

He looks *so* different with short-short hair. It's going to take some getting used to.

I need a break...

I'm so exhausted.

I need some downtime...to go to a movie...out to lunch...or even better, a spa treatment, yeah.

So much going on recently, so much stress and worry. Hubby needs time to get himself together, and he's getting it, but I've been just going and going and going, being "the rock".

And this rock is getting frayed round the edges.

I guess when I think about it, I need some *me* time. I'm the kind of person that needs "me time" every so often to stay mentally healthy. I used to do that through reading books. I'd escape into the book and everything else would just go away.

But I don't have the resources to do that anymore...too much I'm responsible for, too much to do, and I just don't get time away.

Sigh.

yay!

Hubby's coming home tomorrow, not staying in Iowa. I could tell by the tone of his voice that he was emotionally drained and ready to come home. Can't blame him one bit. He has a few "challenging" relatives, heh. And he hates Iowa with a passion anyway.

This won't be his last trip out there, though, I'm certain. There's still the matter of all his mom's things to take care of - inventory, distribution, purging. And though his sis is executrix, I'm sure she'll need/want help with that.

I'm glad he's coming home. Two nights on my own is plenty...especially after last night's escapades...up every two hours with the boy. He must be growing, he downed a full bottle each time!

But I'm a zomboid from lack of sleep, ugh.

Bedtime now.

The wee one has been quieter tonight so far, so I'm hoping this bodes well for the rest of the night.

hubby's off to Iowa

He left this morning at 6:15 am. There is a prayer service tonight and the funeral is on Tuesday. I offered to go with him (my parents said they'd watch the boy), but he said he felt better knowing I was here safe with the baby. I'm thinking he would have felt guilty with me along and the boy being taken care of by grandma and grandpa, though I don't know why. Part of me wishes I could be there with him to help, but another part of me is so glad not to be going to Iowa.

He may come back on Wednesday, at least that's the plan for now. But he may simply stay to help get things taken care of, and then fly directly from there to VA for his uncle's services.

We'll see. For now I'm on my own.

Oh and by the way, I am "over" the issue on Friday. With recent events, I've realized that being all sensitive about something so minor is really silly. It's all about perspective. And I've got so much bigger things to deal with at the moment, like supporting/helping hubby and raising the boy.

when it rains...

...it pours.

My poor hubby. Yesterday was one of the worst days of his life, I think.

We got a call in the late morning telling us that his uncle (his mom's brother) had passed away suddenly. He'd had a lung transplant recently and had developed a little bit of pneumonia, but this turn of events was a complete surprise! He was such a great guy (according to hubby - I only met him once), and it was a big blow to him. That set the tone for the day. Ugh.

Then we got the call that we knew would be coming some time....at about 10pm last night, his sister called to tell him that his mother had just passed. If you've been reading my posts, you'll know she'd been fighting colon cancer and had just recently discovered that she was losing the battle.

We knew it was only a matter of days, but it was so unbelieveable that she and her brother would die on the same day! Hubby I think is still in shock. And I feel helpless to do much more than be supportive.

He's spending today frantically making phone calls to get his affairs in order for next week (to find coverage for his cases) so he can fly out to Iowa for his mom's funeral. And to see if he can arrange to go to Virginia for his uncle's on Friday.

Gads. Two funerals in one week. Two major losses in one day. I'm just stunned.

I am such a baby...

I'm sitting here with my feelings all hurt over something really stupid.

I need to get a grip.

I can't mention it, because it wouldn't be productive and would just cause more hurt feelings. So I need to just suck it up and deal.

Which is what I've been doing for-fricking-ever, it seems.

I'm f-ing tired of sucking it up and dealing. I really would like to just come out and speak my mind about what's going on in my life right now to a few of these people. But I won't.

"Don't rock the boat." Story of my life. =/

I stayed up way too late last night...

...but it was worth it!

Unbeknownst to me, NBC was re-running the pilot ep of their series "Medium" at 10pm last night. I was on my way to bed when I passed hubby on the couch, and the ep had just begun...I was snagged.

I sat down to watch, even though I knew I'd be paying for it today (and I am, YAWN!), and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was creepy, thrilling, intellectually-stimulating, and engaging.

Patricia Arquette plays a woman who can see and talk to dead people, and she has prophetic dreams. These skills totally creep her out, so she's kind of fighting against it, but at the same time she discovers that these skills can help people - mostly in this show involving bringing bad people to justice.

Now I'm going to have to find out when these things are being re-run in order so I can watch the first season...apparently it was a mini-season starting in January, and the final ep of the season was a couple of weeks ago.

Unfortunately it runs in the 10pm time slot...maybe I'm going to have to dust off some tapes (we don't have TiVo). =)

ow ow ow ow

I'm in great pain today.

Two weeks ago I slammed my foot (by accident, of course) into the leg of my desk, and either broke or sprained-really-bad a toe on my left foot.

It had been feeling better and I could pretty much walk on it (in bare feet or Birks, no close-toed shoes yet) without much of a limp, until....

I creamed it again this morning on the kitchen stool.

It hurt so much I almost puked. Unfortunately, the wee one was in his high chair at the time, and being cranky to get up (after finishing breakfast). I restrained my urge to shout at him (it wasn't his fault I was in pain), waited until I could see straight, then let him down.

OMG it still is killing me. Hubby suggested I go in to see the doctor about it this afternoon, but what can they do? In my experience there's not much to be done with a broken or sprained toe except be nice to it and let it heal. /sigh

Maybe I'll go. We'll see how it feels later on.

I want this....

....bumper sticker (seen and reported by hubby):

"Frodo failed. Bush has the Ring."

Ain't it the truth.

*** EDIT: You can get it here! Hee hee! They also have it as a t-shirt. ***
