healthy Booga Boy
Took him in for his 18-month checkup last Friday, and all is good.
He's 34 inches tall...nearly 3 feet! I knew he was big, but wow! 95th percentile, according to the doc.
Verbal skills coming along nicely, she says, though I wonder. I've seen kids his age saying many more words. I laid in bed the other night trying to identify ones I know he's said...
"kuh" - Truck
"dee dee" - Kitty
"mama"
"dada"
"teef" - Teeth
"nah" - No (this one gets a lot of use hehe)
"ha" - Hi
Those are the identifiable ones, though I am sure he has his own words for things that we just haven't been able to decipher.
Finickiness with foods? Normal, the doc said, he'll outgrow it. Well, I was relieved to hear that, considering just about the only thing he'll eat these days (aside from fruit) is Lean Cuisine Sesame Chicken, and fish sticks with ketchup. Things he used to eat before, he'll refuse to eat now. Guess I'll keep trying, eventually it'll change.
I'm just glad he's doing well, from the doc's perspective.
a little wisdom...
Drink tea and nourish life.
With the first sip... joy.
With the second... satisfaction.
With the third, peace.
With the fourth, a Danish.
belly...meet foot!

This picture, when I first saw it, did what it was intended to do - made me say "Wow!" Unfortunately, as I found out after some not very strenuous digging around the internet, it's a hoax...a very good Photoshop job. With at least 1" of placenta wall between the baby and the mother's abdomen, there's no way an impression of a baby's foot could have this sort of detail.
But still, I wanted to share it anyway. It made me feel good. =)
All Potter's Eve...
...was last night, claimed my local bookstore. They had a shindig for the release of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" at midnight, but there was no way I could stay up that late and go. I was pooped at 9:45pm and went to bed.
However, I *did* go get my copy this afternoon. Borders in three locations was sold out, but my local bookstore still had a couple boxes behind the counter.
I sat down and read the first several pages and realized that I need to refresh-read the previous books first to remind myself of all the supporting chars and exactly what happened, especially in the last book, which was kind of convoluted at the end.
Happy mama, got her Harry Potter. :)
see what I mean?
Okla. Woman Said Gives Birth While Drunk - Yahoo! NewsStupid, thoughtless, selfish, MORON! Why are people like this?!
good vs. evil...
I recently purchased the BBC version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on DVD. Some of you may remember this TV show from way back. =) (Yes, this applies to my title, just bear with me.)
Anyway, the segment where they go into the history of the Earth with Deep Though coming up with the answer to the "ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything" got me to thinking. Not about the ultimate question, really, but about the meaning of life.
Every day on Yahoo! news, on the TV news, everywhere, the news is full of stories of horrible things - bombings, kidnapping, child molestation, murder, greed, scandal, etc. As a student of media, yes, I understand that part of the reason for this is that stories like that sell advertising. A news night full of sunshine and rainbows isn't as interesting to the "average joe".
With so much evil in the world, whether the evil acts stem from inherent wickedness of the perpetrator or simple stupidity or thoughtlessness, I've been wondering about my own life.
I do my best every day to be kind, funny, thoughtful, compassionate, caring, and overall a "good" person. Of course I don't *always* succeed...I have my cranky, selfish, thoughtless moments just like any normal person. But I try to be the kind of person that when people think of, they think of in a positive way.
The whole "meaning of life" segment on HHG got me wondering though, what's the point? I mean, there's so much evil, so many people who don't value life...is my being "good" of any worth at all?
I guess in my heart I know that the positive things I do affect the people around me in a positive way. And I also know that a small stone thrown into a pond can have ripples that reach pretty far. An action, good or bad, on the part of one person can affect things you wouldn't even have imagined.
All my life, I've had a driving desire to believe that people are inherently good. And all my life, I've been disappointed over and over by people who haven't lived up to that. (yes I know that's naive) Yet I still retain that core belief.
Do I expect too much of people? Why is it so hard for them to just "do the right thing"? Yes I know that the definition of "the right thing" is different for different people, but in my mind there are some absolutes. Don't kill people (there are exceptions for me here, like self-defense, for example...my focus on "don't kill" is premeditated murder). Don't abuse or molest children. Don't steal. Don't hurt people (on purpose). Things like that.
Yet it continues to happen, every day over and over, everywhere.
Why?
I just don't understand. Why the hate? Why the violence? Why the irrational unreasonable murder?
I don't want to believe that we're still all just animals, but I guess some are. Hence my "people who should be taken out back and shot right now" list.
Guess I just wanted to share some of the things that I've been pondering lately.
ok, our turn now...
Canada Lawmakers Approve Gay Marriage Bill - Yahoo! NewsConsidering the US is supposed to be the land of the free and represent life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, I think it's time we took Canada's cue and recognized that
love is love, regardless of your plumbing.
A hearty "Good on ya!" to Canada!
Jack Handey, my ass...
Deep thoughts late at night? Nah....but it's interesting what strange things pop into my mind when I've stayed up too late...like right now.
I was just remembering the night after the Booga Boy was born. He was born at 3:52 in the afternoon, and I was remembering that night, when I decided I didn't want to bug the nurses to come in and help me get to the bathroom so I could pee.
Of course, silly me, I sat up, swung my legs off the bed, stood up using my tummy muscles to help me, and proceeded to pee all over myself and the floor. So embarassing. Course I couldn't really help it, seeing as all those muscles down there had only hours earlier pushed a 9-pound baby out a 10cm opening and gotten all traumatized for their trouble, but still...
Hehe. Late night odd thoughts. =)

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "Fund Free Mammograms"(pink button in the middle).
This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate a mammogram in exchange for advertising.www.thebreastcancersite.com
