OMG kill me now...
I agree with something President Bush said! Usually, the inanity that spews forth from his lips just makes me ill, but I'm stunned and shocked - he said something that I agree with!
To wit: "I think people who want to be citizens of this country ought to learn English," Bush said.
(from a Yahoo! article
here)
I am proud of America and its status as a melting pot. I love that we have diverse people that live here who speak so many different languages and represent so many different cultures.
HOWEVER...I do not agree that just because they immigrated to the US, that we should cater to them. I do not approve of people who immigrate here and don't bother to learn the language, insulating themselves in their own society.
I mean honestly, if I moved to France, Russia or some other non-English speaking country, I certainly wouldn't expect everyone there to speak to me in English! I wouldn't expect them to change their signs and governmental forms to include English versions! I would learn the language, either before or after I moved there, so I could actually participate in society!
Come to America, learn English, dammit! Absolutely keep your cultural and linguistic identity...teach your children your native language too...but learn the language of the country you've chosen to live in!
That being said, I am almost sick that Bush said something I actually agree with. Ugh.
wow....
...it's nearly May. Day to day, the hours seem to drag on interminably, but in the big picture, I can't believe summer's almost here! (I'm so ready for nice weather, after all this fricking rain the past few weeks.) Where has the time gone?
The Booga Boy has new words every day. And he's so good...I say, "Come on, sweet pea, let's go upstairs and change a diaper," and he usually just stops what he's doing, picks up a toy to take with him (to entertain himself during the change), and walks quietly with me up the stairs.
When he asks for something that I don't want him to have (cookies for breakfast, for example), and I say "No, you can't have that right now, sweetie," he takes it in stride and suggests an alternative ("Toast?"). No tantrum, no fussing, no whining. If he can't have one thing, he simply goes through a list of other things until he gets to one that is acceptable to mama.
I have a dream child. I just hope it lasts. I'm pretty sure it won't, though! =)
And it's time for a haircut...for both of us. Hopefully I'll be able to get him in for a cut this weekend. He fussed and fussed in the chair last time. We'll see what happens this time.
I've come to the conclusion that I need to cut down on my computer time at home. Being sucked into WoW and Oblivion isn't good for getting things done. Nor for keeping up good communication with the hubby...or my friends and family, for that matter. I've been neglecting my social ties and using computer games as an escape...from what, I'm not real sure yet. Responsibilities, probably.
So anyway, less computer gaming, more me being
in the world instead of just riding along with it.
And dangit, I need to catch up on my Harry Potter reading! I bought the last book on the day it came out, but still haven't read it. Thank goodness I've been able to keep myself relatively spoiler-free. I know someone significant dies...that was leaked and I found out, but I've been real good about not allowing myself to find out WHO, so I can enjoy the book with a pure mind and be suprised/shocked/sad, whatever. And don't *you* tell me, either! =)
philosophy + humor...fun combination
I read this bit of humor on the "Flawless" list, a fan mailing list for Lucy Lawless...
One day in ancient Greece, a loyal student of Socrates informed the famous philosopher that he (the student) had some news about a fellow student. Instead of simply asking the student to tell him the news, as most people would, Socrates said to him, "Before you tell me your news, let us examine whether it passes my three-stage test of value."
"What do you mean by that?" the student asked.
Socrates replied. "Well, the first test is for thruthfulness. Do you know absolutely that what you are planning to tell me is in fact true?"
"Well actually no," the student answered. "Another student gave me the information, and I trust him but don't actually have any proof."
"Then we will apply the second test," Socrates went on. "On a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is a matter of life and death, how important is your piece of news?"
The student considered this and then answered, "Oh about 5, I suppose. It seemed very important at first, but in the terms you use, I am not so sure now."
Then Socrates asked, "Then finally, is this news going to be of some benefit to me or to someone I care for?"
The student spent several seconds considering that and finally said, "Probably not."
Then Socrates said, "Well, if you're not sure that it's true, and it isn't very important, and it isn't of any great benefit, then is there really any point in telling me?"
"No, I suppose not," the student admitted. "I praise your great wisdom in this matter."
Then the student went away and told friends what had happened.
That's how Socrates became known as a truly great Philosopher, and also explains why Socrates never found out that his wife was having it off with Plato.
As I was reading it, I was warmed by the wisdom of the "three-stage test of value" as it applies to all gossip in life...but the punchline made me laugh!
out of the abyss...
...and back into the world!
Yes, that is sort of what it feels like. I've been caught up in World of Warcraft, and let so many other things slip: my Xena site, this blog, my resolution to lose the last bit of that baby weight...and other things too.
I feel like I'm coming out of a dark tunnel back into the light...back into life. It's time for me to start *living* my life instead of just sitting back and letting it roll on by with me as a passenger.
(sigh)
In the world of the Booga Boy, since I last posted:
* I do have updated pictures to post. I'll get to that soon.
* He could count to 10 (almost - he kept forgetting "1") when he was 24 months old.
* So many more words now...nay, sentences yet! It's so amazing listening to his vocabulary and linguistic skills progress.
* He can feed himself using a fork and spoon.
* His tendency toward pickiness with food has not abated.
* He's down to one bottle a day - as part of his night-night routine. No more formula, we're drinking Silk soy milk.
Stay tuned for more (I hope).
