surgery report
Ok, a few days late, but things have been so busy at home with the Booga Boy recovering. I could tell he dodn't feel good, he just wanted to sit on my lap and be held. The surgery went great, according to the doc, and the hernia was fixed without problems. There's a teensy incision (bout 1/2 an inch long) that they covered with a really cute train engine-shaped bandage.
The procedure was scheduled for 10am, and we had to be there at 8:30 so he could be pre-medicated and stuff. Unfortunately there was a backup that happened, and as of 11:15 we were still waiting to get in! They took him finally around 11:30, and it took a little over an hour. Once he started waking up in the recovery room, they let me go in to sit with him.
It was really hard seeing him lying there half-asleep with an IV in his hand and oxygen mask thing on his chest blowing at his face. They wouldn't let me take him home until his blood oxygen levels got up to 96 or 97 and stayed there...we were there til about 3pm! Once he was able to cough a couple of times it got much better.
We got home around 3:30 and all he wanted to do was sleep. He pretty much slept all the way through (with interruptions for bottle a couple of times) until the morning.
I took off work Tuesday to stay home and cuddle him, as he was still having a hard time from the effects of the anaesthesia. He was a little cranky and groggy, and just wanted to be held. Same on Wednesday.
Finally yesterday I could tell he was starting to feel better. He would play with toys and amuse himself mostly like before. Plus, his appetite was back (Tues and Wed he wanted only bottle or bananas).
I was able to remove the bandage Thursday morning (doc said anytime after Wed evening it was ok to take it off), and now he can get a bath yay! I'm just concerned that he might try and itch it during diaper changes - just like most baby boys, his hands shoot down there to play with himself once that diaper comes off. I don't want him to hurt himself, so I'm going to have to be extra careful.
Anyway, things are good, he's doing well, and aside from having to watch the incision site for possible infection for a few more days, we're past this hurdle.
Such a wondamous boy. =)
