my oh-too-often vice....

Caramel Apple Cider: "Steamed apple juice, caramel, cinnamon syrup and whipped cream"

Heaven in a paper cup. And waaaay too many calories to be good for me, especially since I'm trying to lose this baby weight. But...well...everyone's gotta have a guilty pleasure. Combine this with a blueberry scone, and that's my "guilty pleasure breakfast".

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

the weekend report...

Ok, I just remembered that I said I'd give a report on how the princess-to-be thing went on Saturday.

Short version: It went fine. One case of eavesdropping by someone who should have known better. One long afternoon/evening of showers. Three dances in the rain. One feast. One Queen. One Baron, two Baronesses, one Prince, one Princess. Eight awards, ah ah ah ah! (think the Count from Sesame Street)

Being the constant focus of someone's attention was kind of unnerving. Not that everyone was paying attention to me all the time...but that all the time, at least someone in the room was paying attention to me. As the Princess wisely said, when she passed on some advice that was given to her, "Don't fall down, and don't fart."

Ok, I think I can handle that. =)

friendly neighborhood Spiderman...

Yep, a new pic of my wee one over there -------->

He's going as Spiderman for Halloween, but we couldn't get him to wear the mask bit which covers the eyes...ah well...he's still super cute anyway!

ladies, VOTE VOTE VOTE

As Oprah Slaps Bush / With 30 states poised to smack down women's rights again, the one true savior emerges:
"So there she was, the nation's most powerful and popular public female, kicking butt on a recent installment of her insanely beloved TV show with the help of celeb guests (Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, P. Diddy, Christina Aguilera) and galvanizing stunned women across the nation to participate in this election, or else. "

IF YOU'RE A WOMAN, READ THIS ARTICLE. It doesn't matter if you're Republican, Democrat, Green, or even uncommitted, women's rights are in danger, and we can't afford to be complacent this time.

wish me luck...

Today's the first event I'm attending as Princess-to-be. It'll be interesting to see who talks to me, who doesn't, and whose behavior has changed simply because of my new rank.

And it'll be even more interesting to see who tries to talk to me who wouldn't have given me the time of day before. Curious what percieved power does to people's attitudes.

I'll let you know how it goes.

random thought for the day...

Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?

ugly ugly ugly...

...the weather, that is. Rain and wind and of course, the idiots on the road. It's amazing to me how a normal driver's IQ goes down about 100 points when there's a rainstorm.

Poor lil wee one though...I didn't have enough hands to carry him, the diaper bag, and an umbrella when I took him to day care this morning...and we both got wet!

I don't mind rain that much, unless I have to be out in it. I prefer to stay indoors, put on my big furry slippers and my oversize sweatshirt, and watch a sappy chick flick. Can't very well do that anymore with the wee one crawling and climbing everywhere now, but hey, I can dream.

fuck it...

I choose NOT to feel this way. I refuse to be held hostage by what people MIGHT think or say based on my actions or words when they're meant only in a good way. I refuse to live my life second-guessing myself.

If there are people out there who are creeping around looking for an excuse to say or think bad things about me, they're going to find them regardless of what I do. As long as I know I did the right thing, said the right thing, and meant the right thing, I'm good with myself, and in the end that's what matters.

I could never be a celebrity...

...I would just shrivel up and die, I think. Why, you ask?

Well, as I mentioned in a previous post, I'm preparing to step up as Princess through my hobby, the SCA. And, I'm learning that everything I say or type could possibly be misconstrued (intentionally or not), misinterpreted, or somehow used against me or used to hurt someone else.

So apparently I'm going to have to start censoring myself, and expressing only the most benign, boring, and non-offensive ideas. Otherwise, someone might take offense, choose to interpret what I say as some sort of personal attack when it wasn't one, or use my words to maliciously attack me or my friends for no other reason than they are a malicious twit.

When I sat down and thought about this, it made me mad. Why should I censor myself (not that any of my ideas or statements are really inflammatory in the first place - I'm a pretty boring person) just IN CASE any of the above might happen?

Then I realized that's probably what a lot of people in the public eye, especially politicians, go through every day of their lives. Constantly having to evaluate every word that comes out of their mouth, or someone somewhere with nothing better to do might choose to misconstrue it or simply belittle it. Dan Quayle is a perfect case in point...though many things were an "open mouth, remove all doubt" thing with him, every one of his statements were analyzed and critiqued and criticized by some group or another and turned around to make him (or people connected with him) look bad.

I HATE the thought that I'm going to have to live in fear of what I MIGHT say. I HATE that I'm going to have to second-guess every FREAKING word that comes out of my mouth or out of my fingers (via email). I'm a nice person. I don't say things to hurt people or piss them off. Why can't people just GET that and be done with it? Why are there people out there with hidden agendas that I have to beware of?

Really I guess what it all comes down to is my disillusionment. Deep down, ever since I can remember, I've had this illusion that all people were basically good. Ok, maybe not serial killers or people like Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer, but MOST people. And being thrust into "the spotlight" like this has tarnished that illusion. And that pisses me off.

So you celebrities, politicians, and other people in the public eye out there...well...I have had a little taste of what you live with every day, and frankly...you can have it.

guess we're still ugly Americans....

Europeans Lament a 'Changed' America

We already had a bad reputation for being arrogant self-centered pushy tourists...now our country as a whole is getting a bad reputation?

When I was in college in the late 80's, some friends of mine did a semester of study overseas. I remember most of them came back saying that they'd learned quickly not to admit to being American when people asked them where they were from. Some said they were from Canada. Others said they got a much warmer response when they said they were from California specifically, rather than from America.

Apparently, due to television, California itself is a pretty good place to be from...just not "America".

It's kind of depressing actually. Our world is getting smaller. America cannot afford to alienate other countries simply because we are the #1 power in the world. There's a lot of responsibility to being in that position, and with the world getting smaller and smaller as technology and the media invade our lives, I think it's a mistake for us to come off looking like the class bully.

One day we're all going to just be one world and we're going to need to be on good terms with, and play nice with, the other countries in power. God I hope we get that bastard Bush out of office.

pant, pant, pant

My life is still crazy. Can't believe it's been this long without posting. I just don't have time! Planning this and that, emailing people, fabric shopping, phone calls, meetings, ACK!

My poor hubby is going to have a greater load of responsibility taking care of our wee one on the weekends, as I'll often be spending 3 of the 4 Saturdays a month away at events. I'm hoping to enlist my parents as backup help, because many times hubby spends his weekends catching up on paperwork, filing, and billing for his law practice, and he wouldn't be able to do that if he's having to watch the baby.

OH! GUESS WHAT!!! THE WEE ONE IS CRAWLING!!

He zooms around the house, chasing the kitties. =) He's figured out how to climb the stairs like a pro. And, he's starting to pull himself up to a standing position, using the couches, chairs, coffee table, whatever's within reach. I'm so PROUD OF HIM!

I went to BabiesRUs the other day and bought all sorts of safety gadgets...electrical plug covers, power strip covers, cabinet locks, etc. Our house is still not wholly babyproofed, but it's getting there!

He's such a wonderful boy. As my hubby likes to say..."the bestest boy". =)
